Web design in Cheltenham

I’ve been very lax lately. Since I last posted I’ve had all this bile building up as I looked at local “web designers” site.
Last night I quickly knocked up a longer, tounge in cheek rant on the state of Web design in cheltenham.
Take it for what it is, nothing more, please… flames will be ignored
I must admit, I had a good laugh reading the article, only because I once was Cheltenham web designer
)
What you say is true though – Cheltenham is notorious for the number of design/print shops and none that I know of have ever truely grasped the concept of design for web.
Basically in Cheltenham you get two things:
- An agency who claims to be able to transition your corporate image to the web, yet quotes in terms of pages of text and images. They have never understood the web, how to use it properly and think that all you need to do is take yout 2 page ad and upload it to a reseller hosting account as JPEGS. Most of these are found in the area of Royal Well or various small offices near Cheltenham Railway Station.
- An agency whos concept of the web is not useful content, but simply spouting as much technobabble and Deja Moo (The same bullshit you’ve heard before) about B2B, targetted marketing strategies and SEO (sorry cow!). They sure as hell will get you a good ranking on Google but there wont be anything of actual use on your site. Account execs for these companies can be found most Friday nights at the wine bar at the top of Montpellier.
Truth is, in 8 years 80% of the web sites I’ve seen from Cheltenham Web Agencies are nothing more than glorified contact pages. A few flashy images, 200 words your marketing guy came up with over lunch on Friday and a crappy map showing “how to find us”. If you went to one of the “top” agencies, you might even get a feedback form (that doesn’t work) and couple of press releases copy-and-pasted from Word.
Its sad, but its so very true…
